Spring 2020
ARTIST STATEMENT
Prior to the semester, I had been trying to dive more into a different media other than design. I felt I was too focused on one media and never expanded or thought of other alternatives. I felt behind, unaccomplished and scared for what was to come if I didn’t think deeper and expand my horizons. I never thought I had the abilities or skills to focus on multiple things at once while taking more time for myself. Now, over the semester I have been improving my photography skills by taking a photography class. While it’s only an introductory class, I certainly learned a lot more about photography as a whole, but also about myself. For my final I wanted to dive into “the self” and really explore what I didn’t know about myself, and quarantine gave me that opportunity. If you know me, you know I love my hair, even if I do wear a hat everyday. It grows like wildfire and get pretty luscious if I let it.
I knew I needed a haircut pre quarantine, but never got the chance, and with barbershops closed and my girlfriend at the time (who is a licensed cosmetologist and has cut my hair before) living back at home, I knew this was the perfect opportunity to capture what I wanted. I decided to shaved my head from the length it was all the way down to a 2 all the way around. I call this project “The Self: a different way to think”. This was a life changing moment for myself and I certainly do not regret it. I look upset and you can interpret my facial expressions as you want but know I was all smiles through the whole thing. Enjoy!!
